TUTICORIN  DISTRICT

There are 16 Handloom Weavers Cooperative Societies in Tuticorin District,  9 Handloom Weavers Cooperative Societies are working and one society is  dormant.   There are 660 Active looms  in  these  societies. All  looms  are  working.                                Handloom Weavers are  producing  Free Distribution Sarees and 80s x 80s cotton sarees.
WELFARE SCHEMES IMPLEMENTED BY HANDLOOM DEPARTMENT

1. FREE DISTRIBUTION OF SAREES AND DHOTHIES

The Sarees and Dhothies are required for free distribution have been produced by both

Handloom and Powerloom Weavers Cooperative Societies which have been procured by Co-optex

(TNHWCS) and supplied to Taluk Offices in this state for distribution.

I-A. FREE DISTRIBUTION OF UNIFORMS TO SCHOOL CHILDREN

The uniform cloth is also produced and supplied to the Social Welfare Department for distribution among the school children.

II. SAVINGS AND SECURITY SCHEME:

To  encourage  saving  habits  among  handloom  weavers,  the  State   Government  is implementing this scheme from 1975. The Government of India is also participating in the scheme from the year 1985-86.  Under the scheme weaver member in the Weavers Cooperative Societies contributes 8 paise per rupee of wages earned. Both the State and Central Government contribute
4 paise each and the State Government allow 6.5% interest allowed to the members enrolled in

this scheme. This is the feeder scheme for old Age Pension and Family Pension Scheme.

 

III. OLD AGE PENSION SCHEME :

The  member  enrolled  in  the  Savings  and  Security Scheme  who  contribute  member contribution continuously for 2 years (ie.) at the age of 59 & 60 years in attaining the age of 60 years they are eligible to get old age pension Rs.200/- per month with effect from 1.4.97.  and increased to Rs.400/- per month from 1.6.2007.   The Same is increased to Rs.1,000/- from 1.1.2012.

IV. FAMILY PENSION SCHEME :

In the event of death of a weaver member who is enrolled as a member in this scheme before attaining the age of 60 years,  the nominee of a deceased member will be paid a monthly
pension of Rs.550/- for 10 years from the date of death of the member  or to the till date of attaining the age of 60 years of the decreased member from 1.5.07. and  now increased to Rs.1,000/- from 1.1.2012.

V. MAHATMA GANDHI BUNKER BHIMA YOJANA:

Bunker Bhima Yojana is being implemented by both Central and State Government from the year 2004-05.   The Name of the scheme is changed into  Mahatma Gandhi Bunker Bhima Yojana Scheme with effect from 2.10.2006.   The insurance amount is payable to the Deceased Handloom Weavers as detailed below from 1.10.2007.
For Natural death Rs. 60,000/-

For accident death Rs.1,50,000/- For total disability Rs. 1,50,000/-
For  Partial disability Rs. 75,000/-

Under the above scheme scholarship is being paid to children of  Handloom Weavers
(restricted to 2 children) studying in Std. IX to XII at Rs. 1200/- per year  per  child.    This scholarship scheme is known as Shiksha Sahayog Yojana. (Rs. 300/- per quarter)

VI. FREE SUPPLY OF ELECTRICITY TO HANDLOOM AND POWERLOOM WEAVERS:
Government of Tamilnadu under this Scheme Free Electricity upto 100 units bi-monthly for Handloom Weavers and upto 500 units for powerloom weavers are being provided with effect from 1.8.2006. 1321 are covered and benefited in this scheme.
VII. HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME FOR HANDLOOM WEAVERS:

The  Government  of  India  has  introduced  a  Health  Insurance Scheme  for  Handloom Weavers form the year 2005-06.  This scheme is being implemented through I.C.I.C.I LOMBARD. The total premium for the scheme is Rs. 939.76 per weaver per annum.  Of which Government of India`s contribution will  be Rs.769.36 and the weaver`s contribution will be Rs. 170.40.                                                                                                                    In Tamilnadu, the weaver`s contribution of Rs. 170.40 being paid by the State government under the Scheme, the weaver`s family of 4 (ie.,) self, spouse  and  two children can avail of medical treatment in any one of the  empanelled Hospitals without actually having to pay for the medical treatment to a maximum of Rs. 15,000/- per annum.
